The UAlbany Performing Arts Center, operating under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences and with support from the UAlbany Foundation and University Auxiliary Services, is pleased to present KEIGWIN + COMPANY onThursday, April 9, 2015 at 7:30pm as the next offering in the In the Raw series. The series has also received statewide support from the New York State DanceForce, which in turn receives funding from the New York State Council on the Arts Dance Program, and locally from the Dance Alliance. The program will feature Love Songs(2006), Trio (2012), Mattress Suite (2003) andFemale Portraits, a compilation of women’s solos from throughout the company’s works.
In the Raw features dance companies in studio performances of their work. This format strips down the production values so that the essence of the dance is brought to the forefront. “When you watch great dancers from a distance—say two dozen rows back from the proscenium stage—you admire their craft. When you watch them from a few feet away, you fall in love,”claimed Tresca Weinstein in the Times Union about the series setup. With only 101 seats available, the setting is intimate, the performers are up close and personal and there is ample opportunity for dialogue between artists and audience. The studio performance will be followed by a Q&A with the company moderated by Albany native and company Executive Director Andrea Lodico Welshons. There will also be a reception in the lounge for the entire audience and the artists furthering the opportunity for conversation between spectators and performers.
Founded in 2003 by Artistic Director Larry Keigwin and Associate Director Nicole Wolcott, KEIGWIN + COMPANY’s dances embody a theatrical sensibility of wit, style, and heart. Since the premiere performance at Joyce Soho, Larry Keigwin has created 29 dances. This year, the company looks forward to the commission of two bright choreographic stars, Adam Barruch and Loni Landon, and its first-ever film project Bolero Senior Citizens, a collaboration with noted director Richard Press. Over their first decade, KEIGWIN + COMPANY has presented performances throughout New York City including New York City Center and the Joyce Theater and nationwide at venues including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Summerdance Santa Barbara, American Dance Festival and Bates Dance Festival.
